Course Title: Nineteenth-Century American Poetry

Course Description: Explores poetry written in the United States in the nineteenth century. Authors considered may include Dickinson and Whitman; New England poets including Whittier, Longfellow, Sigourney, and Holmes; and African-American poets, such as Frances Ellen Watkins Harper. Issues considered may include poetry and American literary nationalism; gender, sentimentalism, and poetry; and abolition and the Civil War in poetry.
